Is Santa Pola worth visiting?
Yes — with one clear exception, which is at the top of this page rather than buried at the bottom. Written from the town, not from a press pack.
The short version
Santa Pola is a quiet, walkable working town on the Costa Blanca. Real fishing port, good beaches, good food, mild weather most of the year, and the ferry to Tabarca island leaves from here. It is an easy place to be with young children, and it is noticeably cheaper than the resorts either side of it.
It is not the place for a nightlife holiday. That is the honest caveat, and it is the one thing that sends people home disappointed.
Who should not come
Younger visitors whose holiday is built around going out. The number of late-night bars and clubs in Santa Pola is small, and no amount of good weather fixes that. If you are picturing a Benidorm-style strip, you will be disappointed by about the second evening.
This does not rule the town out entirely — Alicante is roughly 20 km away and has the nightlife, so one night out is perfectly doable from here. But if that is the main event, base yourself there and visit Santa Pola for the day.
Is Santa Pola expensive?
No — it is cheaper than Benidorm, Alicante and Torrevieja. That holds for eating out and for a bed, and it is one of the better arguments for coming here instead.
Parking is the other saving that people forget to count. It is not the daily battle it is in the bigger resorts, and out of high season it is a non-issue.
Is Santa Pola lively, or dead out of season?
Quiet, not shut. That distinction matters on this coast, where plenty of places genuinely board up in November. In Santa Pola occupancy drops, parking stops being a problem, and the shops and restaurants keep trading.
So if you are choosing a Costa Blanca base for spring or autumn, that is an argument in favour rather than against. In July and August it is a different town — busy, full, and worth booking well ahead for.
Is Santa Pola safe?
Yes. Walking the seafront or the old quarter at night is unremarkable here, and there is a steady police presence around the town. It is the kind of place where the usual advice — watch your things on a packed August beach — is about the extent of it.
So what would you actually do here?
- ⛴️Tabarca island.The single best reason to be in Santa Pola rather than anywhere else. Spain’s first marine reserve, fifteen minutes offshore, and the boat leaves from this port.
- 🏖️Beaches with room on them. Long sand either side of the town, plus rockier coves under the cape.
- 🍽️Eating. It is a working fishing port, and that shows up on the menus at prices that are not aimed at tourists.
- 👨👩👧Being here with kids. Flat, walkable, calm water, short distances. This is what the town is genuinely good at.
If you decide to come
Book early for July and August — the town fills up and the good places go first. For the rest of the year you have room to choose.
